Saint Benedict of Aniane (12 February): Butler's Lives of the Saints

St. Benedict of Aniane (†821), honored on February 12, was one of the greatest reformers of monastic life in the Western Church. Born a nobleman and court official under King Pepin and Charlemagne, he abandoned wealth, honor, and royal favor to pursue radical holiness under the Rule of St. Benedict.
After a near-fatal experience that awakened him to eternity, Benedict renounced the world and embraced extreme penance, prayer, and poverty. He became the principal instrument in restoring monastic discipline across France and Germany during the reign of Emperor Louis the Pious. His efforts brought unity to the Benedictine Order and strengthened the spiritual life of Europe at a decisive moment in history.
