St Lucy of Syracuse, virgin and martyr, is commemorated by the Catholic Church on December 13. Born in Syracuse, Sicily, during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, St Lucy dedicated her life to Christ, distributed her wealth to the poor, and made a vow of perpetual virginity.

When she refused to marry a pagan suitor, he denounced her as a Christian to the Roman prefect Pascasius. Lucy was arrested and sentenced to be defiled in a brothel, yet by God’s power she miraculously preserved her purity. The pagans then attempted to burn her alive, but the flames did not harm her. Finally, she achieved martyrdom through a sword thrust to the throat.

The name Lucy (Lucia) comes from the Latin word lux, meaning light, and she is especially invoked for afflictions of the eyes. According to tradition, she was blinded by her torturers, and the Church of San Giovanni Maggiore in Naples claims to possess her eyes.

⚠️ This saint should not be confused with St Lucy of Campania, commemorated on July 6.
