In today’s reading from The Lives of the Saints, we commemorate St Valerian of Abbenza and the many holy martyrs of the Vandal persecutions under King Gaiseric and his successor Huneric.

St Valerian, already over eighty years old, was commanded to surrender the sacred vessels of his church. Refusing with unwavering fidelity to the Catholic Faith, he was expelled from the city. The faithful were forbidden to shelter him, leaving the holy bishop exposed to the elements with no human assistance. In this suffering, he completed his blessed life as a confessor and defender of the true Faith.

The Church also remembers on this date the holy virgins consecrated to God who endured horrific torments during the reign of Huneric. They were hung by the arms, beaten, burned with hot coals, sold into slavery, cast into the desert, and tortured in unspeakable ways—yet they remained steadfast until death for Christ.

Our knowledge of these martyrs comes primarily from Victor of Vita, whose Historia persecutionis Africanae Provinciae preserves the memory of their heroic witness.

🙏 May their courage strengthen us to remain faithful in times of trial.
