Venerable Paul of Latros, commemorated on December 15, was a great Orthodox ascetic, clairvoyant, and wonderworker of the 10th century.

Born in the city of Ainos in Pergamum, Saint Paul was early bereft of his father and was educated at the Monastery of Saint Stephen in Phrygia. After the death of his mother, he devoted himself entirely to the monastic life, pursuing greater spiritual struggles at a monastery on Mount Latros near Miletos.

Seeking even loftier ascetic accomplishments, Saint Paul withdrew into a cave, where his intense ascetic labors were rewarded by God with the gifts of clairvoyance and wonderworking. His holiness became widely known, and even Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus frequently wrote to him, seeking his prayers and spiritual counsel.

Saint Paul twice withdrew to a nearby island, where he founded a monastery and restored three monasteries that had been devastated by Arab (Hagarenes) raids. Endowed with prophetic insight, he foretold the time of his repose and fell asleep in the Lord in the year 955.
