Blessed Bartholomew of San Gano, also known locally as San Baro, was a 13th-century Italian priest whose life of humility, pastoral charity, and heroic patience in suffering stands as a powerful witness to Christian holiness.

Born near San Gano in Tuscany at the beginning of the 13th century, Bartholomew initially worked as a servant and nurse at the Benedictine Abbey of San Vito in Pisa. Though encouraged to become a monk, Our Lord appeared to him in a dream, revealing that his crown would be earned not in the cloister, but through 20 years of physical suffering.

Ordained around the age of 30, Blessed Bartholomew was appointed pastor of Pacholi and lived his priesthood in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, as a Franciscan tertiary. His charity extended even into grave illness: after contracting leprosy, he remembered Christ’s prophecy and embraced his suffering with patience and faith.

Accompanied by his faithful friend Vivaldo (Ubaldo)—who would later become a hermit and be honored himself on the altars—Bartholomew retired to the Lazaretto of Saloli, where he served as chaplain. Despite intense pain, he never ceased celebrating Holy Mass.

After exactly 20 years of suffering, Blessed Bartholomew died on December 12, 1300. He was buried in the Augustinian Church of San Gano, where his relics remain today. His cult was locally approved in 1499 and officially confirmed by the Church in 1910. His feast day is celebrated on December 14.
