On this Second Sunday of Advent, we reflect deeply on one of the most dangerous and subtle of the seven deadly sins: envy. Drawing from Sacred Scripture, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Gregory the Great, St. John Chrysostom, and the powerful witness of St. John the Baptist, this sermon explains why envy is called a capital vice and how it undermines charity, humility, and interior peace.

Envy was present from the beginning:
• by the envy of the devil, death entered the world
• in Cain and Abel
• in the betrayal of Christ
• even among the disciples of St. John the Baptist

This sermon carefully distinguishes between four different kinds of sorrow at another’s good, explaining which are virtuous, which are neutral, and which constitute sin properly speaking. Using Thomistic moral theology, we learn why envy is always opposed to charity, why it punishes itself, and how it leads to other sins such as detraction, calumny, hatred, and joy at another’s downfall.

Most importantly, we are shown the remedy:
• humility
• charity
• imitation of Christ
• embracing one’s vocation in the Mystical Body
• the Litany of Humility
• and the shining example of St. John the Baptist, who teaches us to say:

“He must increase, I must decrease.”

This is a powerful Advent meditation for anyone seeking spiritual growth, self-knowledge, and victory over sin.
