Discover the inspiring and heroic life of St. Thomas Holland, a 17th-century Jesuit priest and English martyr, as recounted in The Lives of the Saints by Fr. Alban Butler. Born in 1600 in Sutton near Prescott, Lancashire, Thomas Holland was gifted in languages, scholarship, and holiness—earning the affectionate nickname “Bibliotheca Pietatis” (The Pious Library) from his Jesuit companions.

In this episode, we follow his journey from the English Colleges in St-Omer and Valladolid, to his entry into the Society of Jesus, and finally to the dangerous mission field of Protestant-ruled England. Despite severe hardships and poor health, Fr. Holland served courageously for seven years before being arrested, tried at the Old Bailey, and condemned to death for the “crime” of being a Catholic priest.

On the eve of his martyrdom at Tyburn, he continued to celebrate Mass and hear confessions. His final declaration before the crowd—openly professing his Catholic faith, priesthood, and Jesuit identity—moved many deeply. He offered his life for the conversion and prosperity of England, proclaiming he would die “as many times as there are hairs on my head” for the faith.

This powerful account honors a courageous priest whose holiness and steadfast love for Christ continue to inspire today.
