St. Theodora the Empress, wife of Emperor Theophilus the Iconoclast, is commemorated on February 11th. Though married to a ruler who persecuted the holy icons, Theodora remained faithful to Orthodox teaching and secretly venerated sacred images.

After the death of her husband in 842, Theodora governed the Byzantine Empire as regent for her young son, Michael III. In one of the most pivotal moments in Church history, she convened a council that anathematized the iconoclast heresy and restored the veneration of holy icons. This historic victory is celebrated each year as the Triumph of Orthodoxy on the First Sunday of Great Lent.

St. Theodora not only defended the true faith but also instilled deep devotion to Orthodoxy in her son. After Michael came of age, she retired to the Monastery of St. Euphrasini, where she spent eight years in prayer, ascetic struggle, and spiritual reading. A copy of the Gospels written in her own hand is known to exist.

She reposed peacefully around the year 867. In 1460, her holy relics were given to the people of Corfu, where they continue to be venerated.

St. Theodora stands as a powerful example of Catholic and Orthodox courage — a wife, mother, empress, and saint who preserved the true faith during one of the Church’s greatest crises.
