Join The CatholicTV Network for the full Daily Catholic Mass celebration on this Thursday of the Fourth Week of Ordinary Time, as we honor the Memorial of Saint Agatha.
In today’s stirring Homily, Father Matthew Harrington reflects on the "wondrous way of life" of the martyrs. Drawing from the courage of St. Agatha, who suffered for her devotion to Christ, Father Harrington encourages us to "deny ourselves" and love God above all things. We are reminded that, like the Apostles sent out with nothing but a staff, we are called to rely entirely on God's "heavenly care". This Mass invites us to "see what must be done" and find the spiritual strength to live our faith with constancy and joy.
The Scriptures highlight the passing of earthly power and the beginning of the Gospel mission:
-The First Reading (1 Kings 2:1-4, 10-12): As King David's life draws to a close, he gives his final charge to his son Solomon, urging him to "be worthy of your posts" and to keep the mandates of the Lord. David then rests with his ancestors, and Solomon's throne is firmly established.
-The Responsorial Psalm (1 Chronicles 29): A hymn of praise to the Divine Sovereign: "Lord, you are the ruler of all".
-The Holy Gospel (Mark 6:7-13): Jesus summons the Twelve and sends them out two by two, granting them authority over unclean spirits. He instructs them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money—teaching them to trust in Providence as they preach repentance and heal the sick.
Let us pray that these "sacred mysteries" may restore us to holiness and help us to always profess the faith that St. Agatha defended with her life.
