In today’s insightful Homily, Father Paul Ring explores the profound nature of divine wisdom and the true meaning of purity. Reflecting on the Queen of Sheba’s visit to King Solomon, Father Ring reminds us that while worldly fame and riches are passing, the "heavenly care" and wisdom of God remain eternal. We are invited to examine our own lives, moving beyond outward appearances to understand that what truly defiles a person comes from within the heart. This Mass encourages us to "see what must be done" in our spiritual journey, finding the strength through this "divine sustenance" to live with integrity and love.
The Scriptures contrast the seeking of worldly wisdom with the interior landscape of the soul:
-The First Reading (1 Kings 10:1-10): The Queen of Sheba travels to Jerusalem with a vast retinue to test King Solomon with subtle questions. Astounded by his wisdom and the "stately home" he built, she declares that the report she heard did not even tell half of his greatness, praising the Lord for His eternal love for Israel.
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 37): A commitment to righteous living: "The mouth of the just utters wisdom".
-The Holy Gospel (Mark 7:14-23): Jesus summons the crowd and teaches a radical truth: nothing entering from outside can defile a person; rather, it is what comes out from within—from the heart—that defiles. He lists the evil thoughts and deeds that emerge from the human heart, calling us to a deeper, interior conversion.
May this "heavenly care" and the Sacred Mysteries" we celebrate today restore us to holiness and help us on our journey to eternal salvation.
